Installation of a Wireless Scale for the Steel Coating Industry

These wireless radios are used to provide communications with scales on portable drum carts that are used in a Class I, Division 1 hazardous location. At IPC, we specialize in industrial wireless communications for hazardous locations. This system was installed in a steel coil coating facility that was utilizing solvent based coatings. Our applications engineers performed a comprehensive assessment of the facility and developed a compatible protocol that was tested throughout the plant. IPC designed, assembled, and installed the entire system which included features such as explosion proof enclosures and antenna adapters, intrinsic safety barriers, and pushbutton controls. The 900 MHz radios used had rechargeable batteries, with low power settings. They operate in a sleep mode until information from the scale is required, which it sends to the base radio, then goes back into sleep mode. This system was designed, programmed, tested and installed in this customer’s facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky in 8 weeks.
